Functioning before daylight saving

Preserving the Past by Pat Mulso
Daylight saving time begins today. What did we do before this started? I suppose there must be an advantage, I’m just not sure what. I know depending on the time of year we have more daylight in the morning or more in the evening. Somehow we managed to function before, but now we need to remember to reset our clocks and then try to adjust our internal clocks as well to fit the current schedule.
Thursday marks the 103rd anniversary of the founding of Girl Scouts. We salute the Girl Scouts in our area and, of course, don’t forget to buy your Girl Scout cookies to support the projects of our local Girl Scout troops.
The last of our photo workshops for the legacy grant, “Freeborn County You Tell Us,” will be March 19. We are requesting the help of the general public to complete this photo scanning project. We are looking for family generation photos, group organization photos, business photos, buildings within the county or photos of events which have taken place within Freeborn County. Appointments are available between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Call the museum and ask for Hattie to schedule your appointment time. Your photos will be scanned and returned to you immediately. We will host a PowerPoint presentation of photos we have collected during this project at 2 p.m. April 25 in the museum meeting room. This presentation is free to the public, and we hope you will join us to see what an amazing array of photos we have preserved for future generations. This project is funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
The next of our FCHM lecture series will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday followed by a half hour for discussion. The March lecture subject is “Architecture in Freeborn County.” Plan to join us and take a look at the many types of architecture within our community. Admission is free for museum members and $5 for non-members.
The Freeborn County Historical Museum will participate in a volunteer fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 21 at Northbridge Mall. This will be a time for you to visit with us or other organizations and ask questions regarding volunteer opportunities.
FCHM is having a soup and dessert fundraiser March 30 to raise money for a new PA system for the museum meeting rooms. We will host the fundraiser at the museum and will serve from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for dinner that night. You may purchase tickets in advance from any FCHM Board member, at the museum during our regular hours or at the door that evening. Tickets are $7.50 and include, soup, crackers, dessert and a beverage.
The museum will host a four-hour defensive driving refresher class from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. April 9. The four-hour class is required every three years after the initial eight-hour class is taken to continue receiving a discount on your auto insurance. The cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members and this fee includes class materials and an administrative fee. You must register for the class by calling the museum at 507-373-8003 or stopping by during our regular business hours, which are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
