It is about time for some spring cleaning

With spring just around the corner, I’m beginning to get a little antsy.

Every year as the weather starts to get warmer and the is shining, I get an itch to do all sorts of projects around the house.

Whether it’s reorganizing my two children’s toys, painting a new room or redecorating, this is the time of year I love.

There’s something about bringing order or a fresh look to your home that for me is rewarding and refreshing.

The other night after my children Landon and Sophie were asleep, I looked around the living room to see toys scattered around. My philosophy has always been if we don’t have enough room for all of our toys in the toy box, then we have too many toys.

Every once in a while we go through the toys and try to weed them down. I let Landon and Sophie tell me which toys they no longer want and sometimes I pipe in and tell them they are getting too old for a particular toy. At least once a year I like to have a yard sale or I try to sell some of them online or on Facebook.

I like to do the same thing with my own belongings. If I haven’t used it in a year, and it’s not something related to a holiday or is not sentimental or historical in any way, I like to get it out of the house.

As each year goes by that I am a parent I feel like my cleaning habits have changed.

You can ask my parents how I was at cleaning when I was in high school, and they will tell you that I wasn’t necessarily the cleanest person around.

Now, it’s almost like I have become obsessive-compulsive if things aren’t clean. Just ask my husband.

Having said that, our home is not always the tidiest — it can’t be with two young children, especially a 3-year-old boy. I am beginning to accept that.

All this talk about spring cleaning then made me think about if I needed to do any other spring cleaning in my life.

Are there any bad habits or negative feelings that I am harboring in the house that I need to clean out?

I’ll be the first to admit I have some areas I need to improve, and this spring I’d like to focus on those areas.

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and I am ready to make some improvements to my life that will also be rewarding and refreshing.

I’ve talked about these improvements in this newspaper before, but I’d like to strive for some changes to my health.

It’s time to dust off the yoga mat, handheld weights and fitness videos, and do a little spring cleaning in my kitchen as well.

Getting rid of extra baggage — so to speak — is easier said than done, but I know that just as exciting as it is to get rid of a bunch of junk in the house, it will be equally if not more exciting to get rid of some bad health habits. Here’s to some spring cleaning!
