50 years ago: 1965

• Winners of the Albert Lea Men’s City Bowling Tournament included Peterson’s Bar, team members were Stan Getskow, Ed Tukua, Merle Peterson, Duane Troe and Jerry Dornquast; singles, Bud Hoffman; doubles, Chris Johnson and Russ Moderman; handicap all events, Den Jensen; high actual all-events, Dick Cashman; high game, Merle Jordahl; high series, Chris Johnson.

• At the Region 1 wrestling tournament, Rochester defeated second-place Albert Lea 64-59. Winning titles for the Tigers were Ken Stauch at 112 pounds and Ken Stencel at 138.

• In the first round of West Subdistrict boys’ basketball tournament, Freeborn defeated Ellendale 59-57. Dick McKean scored 14 points, and Chuck Hinkley, 13, for the Vikings. Blooming Prairie, with Denny Kruckeberg scoring 24 points, topped Alden 69-52. Emmons topped Glenville 49-39. The Eagles were led by Al Rasmussen with 16 points. Larry Vanek scored 14 for Glenville.

 

25 years ago: 1990

• Scott Ellertson of Albert Lea finished first in his age group and fourth overall at the Birkebeiner Cross Country Ski Race in Hayward, Wisconsin.

• A team from Albert Lea won the 1990 Minnesota state Eagles’ pool tournament. Team members were Mike Boone, Gary Voshell, Bob Garza, Dave Hagen and Larry Peck.

• District winners from Albert Lea in the annual Knights of Columbus free throw contest were the following: girls, 13-year-old Tami Sime and Nicole Peter, 10; boys, Pete Breitholtz, 14, and Scott Erickson, 13.

• In the first round of girls’ playoff basketball, Faribault defeated Albert Lea 53-37. June White scored 13 points for the Tigers.

 

10 years ago: 2005

• In the first round of Section 1AAA boys’ basketball playoffs, Albert Lea defeated Northfield 60-53. The Tigers were led by Parker Skophammer with 21 points, Ryan Moore with 16 and Mike Behrends, 14.

• The NRHEG girls’ basketball team defeated Hayfield 42-32 in Subsection 2AA tournament. Emily Hagen scored 15 points for the Panthers.
