The season wrapped up for the Albert Lea boys’ tennis team Thursday after the first round of the Subsection 1AA B Division individual tournament at Faribault.
“The guys played hard today but came up on the short end against some very high quality teams,” said Tigers coach Tom Dyrdal. “Our section is definitely one of the best in the state.”
Albert Lea’s closest match was with the doubles team of Taylor Herfindahl and Schafer Overgaard, who played at No. 1 and No. 2 singles during the regular season. The duo lost 6-4, 5-7 against Northfield’s Maxwell Olson and Christof Zweifel.
The Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team during the regular season, Garrett Matz and Foster Otten, lost 6-1, 6-1 to Northfield’s Tanner Ruppe and Andrew Johnson.
In the singles bracket, Austin Dulitz lost 6-2, 6-1 to Owatonna’s Derek Thada, and Andy Woitas fell 6-0, 6-0 against Northfield’s Maxwell Nickel.
Matt Carlson, Will Martin, Matt Sager, Scott Gryzbowski and Matz finished their senior seasons.
“We will certainly miss our graduating seniors,” Dyrdal said. “They were excellent leaders for us.”
With 35 players on the roster and five graduating seniors, Albert Lea plans to build on experience from this year.
“We had a great season,” Dyrdal said. “We have a lot of talented players returning next year. If the guys continue to work hard, we should have a very competitive team again next year.
The Tigers’ season ended May 12 at the team level. Albert Lea (7-8, 4-8 Big Nine) posted its highest win total since 2005.
