In the final tuneup before the Big Nine Conference meet, the Albert Lea girls’ golf team battled three opponents and the elements.
Natalie Nafzger and Samantha Nielsen posted sub-100 scores in the rain to lead the Tigers to third place Monday at Austin Country Club.
The Tigers completed the course in 391 strokes, which was 20 fewer than fourth-place Austin. Rochester Mayo took first place with a score of 359, and Owatonna was second with 370.
“We saw some good things today from the girls,” said Tigers coach Shawn Riebe. “The weather was a factor, but we played through it and posted a decent round.”
Nafzger shot a 94, and Nielsen added a 95. Kayla Jensen and Sara Rasmussen rounded out the Tigers’ scoring with a 100 and 102.
Next, Albert Lea will compete at the Big Nine Conference meet at 11 a.m. next Monday at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester.
“We have four days of practice to really work on our games and get things going in the right direction,” Riebe said. “We have to cut some strokes to be competitive as a team at the section tournament.”
