WELLS — Cool temperatures and dreary skies couldn’t slow down United South Central’s momentum.

Cody Latusek and the Rebels baseball team defeated the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Bulldogs 5-0 Monday at Thompson Park.

“Momentum is huge,” said USC coach Pat Frank. “That was a big win for us.”

Latusek was on the mound for the Rebels in the shutout. In his seven-inning appearance, he only allowed three hits and one walk, and struck out nine.

“That’s a good hitting team,” said Frank. “He did a really nice job against them.”

Frank also commented on his team’s strong defense, which included a dive by Trevor Stencel and a catch by Derek Herman in the outfield, as well as a timely double play.

“Overall we had some nice plays in the outfield,” he said.

USC’s batting backed up the solid pitching and fielding. Herman and Stencel both hit doubles, and Colin Wegner scored two runs. Riley Kloos had two RBIs, while Grant Becher also had an RBI and a run scored, along with two stolen bases.

The win brings the Rebels’ record to 12-7.

“That momentum will hopefully carry us over into Friday,” said Frank.

Next, the Rebels host Martin County West at 5 p.m. Friday at Thompson Field.
