Shutout pitching boosted the Albert Lea Legion Post 56 baseball team to its second win of the season.

Chris Enderson tossed a no-hitter on Sunday to lead Albert Lea (2-3 overall) past Winona Post 9 10-0 and split a doubleheader after an 8-4 loss in Game 1 at Hayek Field.

Enderson recorded six strikeouts and gave up three walks in seven innings.

“Chris pitched lights out,” said Albert Lea coach Jay Enderson. “If we play like we played the second game, we can beat anybody.”

Post 9 out-hit Post 56 12-7 in Game 1. In Game 2, Albert Lea out-hit Winona 14-0.

In Game 1, Jake Thompson and Enderson led Post 56 with two hits each. Jonathan Fleek added his first hit as part of Albert Lea’s roster after playing for Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa, where he posted the team’s fourth-best batting average with a mark of .326.

Jake Kilby took the loss on the mound. In seven innings, he struck out two batters and gave up four walks and 12 hits.

In Game 2, Thompson led Albert Lea by going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Fleek, Kole Smith, Alex Bledsoe and E.J. Thomas added two hits each.

With Thompson, Fleek, Parker Mullenbach and Jake Bordewick all with experience at shortstop, coach Enderson has multiple options at the position.

“We have some depth in the infield,” he said. “Thompson and Bledsoe are being very flexible, and Bordewick came in and pulled a beautiful double play.”

Bledsoe is Albert Lea’s starting third baseman, but he moved behind the plate for the first time this season.

Next, Albert Lea will play in the Mulvihill American Legion Baseball Tournament from Friday through Sunday.

Post 56 will play St. Paul Park at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Mankato East High School.

Albert Lea will alternate between two sites on Saturday. The team will play Mankato National at 9:30 a.m. at Franklin Rogers Park and Chanhassen at 1 p.m at Mankato East High School.

Pool play will end Saturday, and bracket play will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday morning.

In contrast to VFW games, both matchups of a doubleheader against district opponents count toward the team’s district record, which will be used for playoff seeding.

The Albert Lea VFW Post 447 baseball team swept Rochester John Marshall 16-2 and 12-5 Sunday in a doubleheader at Hayek Field. Bordewick earned the pitching win in Game 1; Garrett Grandstrand took the victory in Game 2.
