UV dash funds healthy snacks for kids

Streets in Albert Lea will light up Saturday night with the Albert Lea Rotary UV Splash Color Dash.

“It’s a fun, high-energy glow-in-the-dark 5K dash,” said Kelly Goskeson, vice president of the Albert Lea Rotary Club. “I used the term dash, but you can run or walk.”

Proceeds will go toward healthy snacks for students at Halverson Elementary School. Goskeson said snacks are not covered through the free or reduced lunch program, and it costs about $96 for snacks per child per year.

“We wanted to focus our energies on a big fundraiser to help kids,” she said.

Last year, money raised from the dash was donated toward the same cause, and Goskeson said Halverson students had free snacks the first trimester and snacks at a reduced price the second and third trimesters.

Registration will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at the North Broadway parking lot near the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, where athletes will receive a race bib and T-shirt.

The untimed race will start at 10 p.m. Saturday. Pets are allowed on leashes to run with dashers.

The UV water is non-toxic food-grade cornstarch with UV coloring, according to the dash’s website.

Along with a band or DJ, Goskeson said the 112 on Broadway sponsored an after-party where participants can get a free beverage with their race bib.

“My favorite part is the energy,” she said. “I’m a runner, and this is a lot different than a lot of the other runs you can do. (Other races) are fun, but they’re a lot more serious. This is a fun run.”
