Albert Lea VFW outlasts Faribault

While Monday morning rain showers pushed play back two hours, it couldn’t slow down the Albert Lea VFW.
The VFW baseball team defeated Faribault 6-4 Monday night at Hayek Field, bringing the VFW’s record to 6-4 overall and 5-1 within its district.
Pitcher Alex Goodmanson recorded the win for the VFW, with just one run allowed on three hits during his three-inning appearance. According to coach Cory Thomas, Goodmanson was coming off of an injury prior to Monday’s game and is still limited in how long he can pitch for. Dillan Lein came in on the mound for the next three innings, while Alex Ulve’s hitless inning gave him the save.
“It was good overall pitching with the three combined,” said Thomas.
On defense, Thomas noted that Jake Bordewick made the “play of the game” when he made a diving catch on a line drive that ended a potential Faribault rally.
Offensively, Thomas called the VFW’s performance a good team effort.
“It was a balanced hitting attack,” he said. “We had seven hits from seven different players.”
Blake Simon led the VFW with two RBIs. Bordewick scored two runs and hit a double while Parker Smith and Logan Stadheim each scored runs as well.
“We had a lot of guys that executed the fundamentals of baseball to lead us to victory,” said Thomas. “That’s the story of the game.”
Beginning with Sunday’s doubleheader — in which Albert Lea dominated Rochester John Marshall with 16-2 and 12-5 victories — Thomas said the team has a busy schedule of 10 games in eight days. He said the team’s goal is to come away with a winning record of those 10 games, and is off to a strong start with the VFW’s three consecutive wins.
Next, the VFW hosts Rochester Mayo at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Hayek Field.
