With a pair of wins in its regular-season finale, the Albert Lea Legion Post 56 baseball team controlled its postseason destiny.

Albert Lea clinched the No. 2 seed in the District 1 tournament and home-field advantage in the quarterfinals by sweeping the Rochester Post 92 Redhawks 6-4 and 7-2 Friday at Dale Massey Field at Rochester.

“They were two very well-played games,” said Post 56 coach Jay Enderson. “We could’ve cashed out and taken a lower seed, but we didn’t.”

The wins were pivotal for Albert Lea’s playoff status. Austin wrapped up the top seed with a 12-2 division record, but there was a log jam for the next four spots, and only the top four teams get home-field advantage in the postseason.

Albert Lea’s sweep pushed the team’s division record to 9-5, while the Rochester A’s and Winona are 8-6 and the Rochester Patriots are 7-6.

The only regular-season District 1 game remaining will be between the Rochester Redhawks and Rochester Patriots. If the Patriots win, they will be the No. 3 seed. However, if the Patriots lose, the A’s and Winona will jump them in the standings, and the Patriots will miss out on home-field advantage in the quarterfinals as the No. 5 seed.

In both victories over Post 92, Post 56 tallied 12 hits. Through both games, Alex Bledsoe led Albert Lea at the plate by going 7-for-8 with a double, three RBIs and a walk.

Jake Kilby went the distance on the hill in Game 1. He struck out four batters and allowed 11 hits, four runs and two walks. The Redhawks scored two runs in the first inning but were held to that same total through the next six innings.

“Kilby struggled early but found his way out,” Jay Enderson said.

In Game 2, Jonathan Fleek pitched six innings and took the win. He struck out five batters and allowed five hits and no walks. Chris Enderson earned the save.

Fleek missed most of the regular season because of scheduling conflicts with the Austin Greyhounds. The play of the entire team elevates when Fleek can play for Post 56, Jay Enderson said.

“It’s a huge thing for this team to have another solid pitcher,” he said. “Even more now since the tournament goes to nine-inning games.”

Next, Albert Lea will host the District 1 quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The tournament will be double elimination with a consolation bracket. The winner of the consolation bracket will need to beat the winner of the championship bracket twice.
