The Worth County Fairgrounds will host a fundraiser this weekend to raise money for a nonprofit organization that places service dogs with veterans.
On Sunday, the event will raise money toward Paws and Effect — an organization that raises, trains and then places the dogs.
A noon lunch will take place at the fairgrounds for Worth County and will be sponsored by the Worth County Beef Producers and Masons. The lunch will raise money for Paws and Effect from $8 donations for every meal served.
The meal has been planned to consist of sweet corn and coleslaw, along with homemade dessert bars.
Another one of the sponsors will be Eastern Star — a group that has strived to uplift and grow in love and service.
“Our main goal is to raise $5,000, which is the cost of one service dog,” member Genie Foss said. “Every year we have a project. We decided this was a worthy cause.”
Other sponsors were the WDCA, Worth County Beef Producers and the Masons. The WDCA provided the venue, the Worth County Beef Producers provided beef and the Masons provided their building and equipment.
“Paws and Effect is a group that is raising money to provide well-trained service dogs with companions who have mobility problems,” Foss said.
Foss agreed that this project was one that most people could identify with and agree upon.
The day’s events will kick off after the lunch, beginning with a flag presentation exhibited by the Northwood VFW at 1 p.m. Following that will be the performance of the Praise Band of Bethel United Methodist Church of Manly.
Next will be service dog demonstrations, where attendees can learn new information on the dogs and ask questions pertaining to the service that the dogs provide for their owners.
By then, a pedal pull and bouncy house will be open for children at 2:30 p.m.
During the day, Broadway music will be performed by Judy Wilson of Muscatine, accompanied by Tammy Van Horsen/Post of West Des Moines.
Also during the day, starting at noon, a silent auction will take place along with a fall plant sale and will end at 4 p.m.
Coordinators of the big event will be Caryl Lawyer and Foss. Lawyer can be reached at 641-454-2355 and Foss can be reached at 641-324-0020.
Along with Eastern Star, Worth Brewery of Northwood will be adding their “Real Ale Relief” program to its menu. The brewery will sell Real Ale, which is a traditional English beer with natural carbonation. The proceeds will periodically go towards Paws and Effect.
