ROCHESTER — The Tigers started their season off with both a win and a loss.

The Albert Lea girls’ tennis team beat Austin 4-3 and then lost to Rochester Mayo 7-0 during a triangular Tuesday in Rochester.

Mercedes Saltou, Alexa Drescher and Anna Boettcher led the Tigers in singles, while Lexus Saltou and Kaedyn Kirchner dominated in doubles.

Albert Lea coach Tom Dyrdal said in a press release that the Austin match was a great way for the team to open up its season.

“Our girls played hard,” he said. “I was pleased the way they all stayed (positive) throughout the highs and lows of the match.”

While winless against Rochester Mayo, Dyrdal said the team played better than the scores reflected.

“The girls enjoy the experience of playing Mayo,” he said. “They enjoyed testing their skills against the top team in the conference.”
