Weekend Planner: Big Island Bar-B-Que slated for this weekend

The Big Island Bar-B-Que contest will be Friday and Saturday at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds.
The contest is for state championship in barbecue, steak and chili. The barbecue will be from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The event is open to the public and has a beer garden, area barbecue food vendors and free entertainment.
There will be a public chili tasting for $5 beginning at 6 p.m. Friday until the chili is gone.
There will also be a Kids Q cooking contest from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday. Echo Messenger will play from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and The Tube Screamers will follow from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. At 9 p.m. there will be an awards ceremony for the Kids Q as well as the chili, steak and barbecue contests.
On Saturday, Ben Marx will play from noon to 12:20 p.m. The Tube Screamers will play again from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. followed by Brother Sun/Sister Moon from 2 to 4 p.m. Chris Anderson & Co. will do comedy from 4 to 4:30 p.m., and at 5 p.m. all other divisions of the barbecue contest will have an awards ceremony.
The Big Island Bar-B-Que is a fundraiser for the kids education days at the Big Island Rendezvous.
Friday
• Operation LZ will be all day at Heritage Park in Forest City, Iowa.
• A make-an-offer rummage sale will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Youth For Christ, 116 W. Clark St.
• These are a Few of my Favorite Things art show will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center. The show features original works of art, objects and family heirlooms.
• The Pelican Breeze II pizza cruise leaves at 6 p.m. from Frank Hall Park. Cost is $20. Ten reservations are needed for the Breeze to leave. Call 507-383-7273 to reserve your spot.
• “Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz” will be at 7 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.
• Enjoy a free movie at 8:30 p.m. at the Edgewater Park bandshell. The movie shown will be “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” rated PG. Bring blankets or lawn chairs.
Saturday
• A make-an-offer rummage sale will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Youth For Christ, 116 W. Clark St.
• The Albert Lea Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m. to noon at Northbridge Mall. Homemade breads, baked goods, honey and more will be available for purchase.

Sunday

• Putts for Mutts will begin at 1 p.m. at Green Lea Golf Course. With a $50 donation, players get a full game of golf and supper at the clubhouse.
• The Pelican Breeze II Al Batt cruise leave at 1:30 p.m. from Frank Hall Park. Cost is $10 per person. There needs to be at least 10 people for the boat to sail. Reserve your spot by calling 507-383-7273.
• Prayer in the Park will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Edgewater Park open pavilion. This prayer session is for teachers, students, school administration, support staff, parents, daycares, homeschoolers and anyone else involved with education.
