Turnovers hinder Tigers at St. Peter

Holding St. Peter scoreless in the second half wasn’t enough to lift the Albert Lea football team to its first win of the season in the regular-season finale.
Jake Kilby rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries and caught two passes for 31 yards, but the Tigers turned the ball over seven times in a 21-8 loss Thursday at St. Peter.
“Our defense played a stellar second half, and our offense moved the ball well,” said Albert Lea coach Kevin Armbrust. “We were in a position to score and make a push to win because the momentum was on our side, but we just turned it over too much.”
Tristan Johnston led the Tigers’ defense with 11.5 tackles, Tanner Palmer had 11 and Emmitt Stevens added 10 1/2.
Stevens also had 25 carries for 85 yards.
Although the official brackets for the Section 1AAAA playoffs have not been released from the Minnesota State High School League, Albert Lea (0-8, 0-8 South Central Red) will most likely play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Red Wing (5-2, 2-2 Big Southeast Blue). The top two teams in the section — Winona and Stewartville — both have 7-0 records and will receive a first-round bye, which means the No. 3 seed will host Albert Lea, the No. 6 seed.
Red Wing opened the season with wins over Northfield, Faribault and Rochester Century. Since that point, the Wingers went .500 with wins over New Prague and Austin and losses against Winona and Mankato West. Red Wing will play at 7 p.m. today against Mankato East (4-3, 2-2 Big Southeast Blue).
