After allowing five or more goals in its first four games, the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team clamped down on defense in the last two.
Coming off their first win of the season — a 3-2 victory Saturday at Winona — the Tigers tied Waseca 2-2 in overtime Tuesday at Waseca Community Arena.
Seventh-grade goalie Maddie Schneider saved 23 of 25 shots on goal.
“Again, Maddie had a fantastic game in the goal,” said Albert Lea coach Jason Fornwald. “The girls continue to improve. I was very pleased with their effort.”
Fellow seventh-grader Sadie Neist netted her first varsity goal, and Hannah Savelkoul scored for the second consecutive game.
“We’re starting to see some of the lines gel together a little more and get a little more familiarity with each other,” Fornwald said. “We came out and played three-plus periods of very solid hockey.”
Neist’s goal broke the ice about two minutes into the opening period on a pass from Ally Rasmussen.
Waseca’s Jayde Pederson tied the game three minutes later with a power-play goal on a pass from Anna Hoehn.
After a scoreless second period, Albert Lea (1-4-1, 1-3 Big Nine) regained the lead 8:33 into the third when Savelkoul scored on the powerplay with an assist from Rasmussen.
The Bluejays (1-1-1, 0-0 Big South) scored the tying goal with 3:21 left in regulation to force overtime and the tie.
Waseca was coming off a 5-4 win Saturday at Minnehaha United.
Next, the Tigers will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rochester Century (2-1, 2-0 Big Nine). The Panthers lost 7-1 at Shakopee (3-1, 1-0 South Suburban) in the season opener but rebounded with a 3-0 win over Winona (0-5, 0-5 Big Nine) and a 6-2 victory over Mankato East/Loyola (1-3, 1-3 Big Nine).
