50 years ago: 1965
• The Rochester Rockets football team remained undefeated at 9-0 with a 39-7 victory over Albert Lea. The Tigers scored on a five-yard pass from quarterback Terry Gilbertson to Dick Wayne.
• Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers won the Cy Young Award as Major League Baseball’s best pitcher. The 29-year-old Koufax won 26 games during the 1965 season and shut out the Minnesota Twins twice in the 1965 World Series.
• Fullback Bill Brown of the Minnesota Vikings was named the Offensive Player of the Week in the National Football League by the Associated Press. Brown gained 138 yards on 26 carries in the Vikings’ 27-7 win over the Cleveland Browns.
25 years ago: 1990
• In the first round of the Region 1AA volleyball playoffs, Albert Lea shut out Faribault 3-0 by scores of 15-6, 15-4 and 15-1. Laura Bisek had 9 kills, and Jody Bumpus was a perfect 23 for 23 serving. Albert Lea defeated Owatonna 3-1 by scores of 15-2, 15-5, 12-15 and 15-10 in a second-round match. Perfect serving for the Tigers were Bumpus, 18 for 18; and Tami Tufte and Lori Coughlin, 17 for 17. Bisek had 17 kills for the Tigers.
• Alden-Conger/Freeborn defeated NRHEG 3-0 by scores of 15-4, 15-2 and 15-4 in a first-round volleyball game in District 2A. Kim Erickson was 17 for 17 serving and Kris Boettcher had 13 kills.

• Senior Kyle Kirsch of Albert Lea was an All-State honorable mention selection.
• Minnesota Twins center fielder Torii Hunter won his fifth straight Gold Glove Award along with Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki and Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez.
• Kirk Burgett of Emmons hit a hole-in-one on the par-3, 165-yard third hole at the Arrowhead Golf Club.
• Mitchell Kleinschrodt scored two touchdowns to lead the Alden-Conger football team to a 44-12 victory over the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf.
