Freeborn County is under a winter weather advisory as a winter storm was expected to move into the area this afternoon.
The area’s first accumulating snow is expected to begin later this morning and increase in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow accumulations are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches, with the heaviest amounts south of Interstate 90.
Other counties included are Blue Earth, Waseca, Steele and Faribault, among others.
According to the Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall rates will occur between noon and 6 p.m.
The primary impact will be travel as this is the first snow of the season.
Motorists should expect reduced visibilities at times and should plan for slippery road conditions, including during the evening commute.
The Weather Service advises people to be prepared for snow-covered roads and to use caution while driving.
The winter weather advisory goes through 3 a.m.
The storm is expected to be worse in Iowa as there is a winter storm warning there.
A warning indicates severe winter weather conditions are expected and that travel is only advised in case of an emergency.
In addition to snow, wind chills will be near zero over northern Iowa by daybreak on Saturday.
A storm system may also bring wintry precipitation next week on Wednesday and on Thanksgiving Day, potentially impacting holiday travel.
