To a white Christmas.thumb.up

We didn’t know if it was going to happen, but somehow the Albert Lea area managed to get a little snow just in time for Christmas.

In 45 years of snow depth measurements in Albert Lea, a white Christmas happens about 69 percent of the time.

The snow helped bring a little extra Christmas spirit. Now that that’s past us, we’ll have to wait and see if we’ll continue to have a mild winter.

To the decrease in taxes next year for the Albert Lea school district.thumb.up

We applaud the Albert Lea School Board for approving a reduction in the district’s tax levy this week.

Though it won’t be enough to offset the increases through the city and county portions, it will help.

School officials said they were able to limit their tax levy increases because of efficiency and careful planning of projects.

Thanks for keeping the taxpayers in mind.

To businesses that failed recent tobacco and alcohol compliance checks.thumb.down

A total of five businesses in Albert Lea and Freeborn County failed recent tobacco or alcohol compliance checks conducted by the Albert Lea Police Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.

Out of the 38 establishments from both departments checked for tobacco sales compliance, five businesses illegally sold tobacco to underage decoys.

Of the 16 checked for alcohol sales compliance in Freeborn County, two illegally sold alcohol.

We hope the checks are a good reminder to area businesses of the need to adhere to laws that restrict the sale of tobacco and alcohol to minors.

To people who have donated to the Albert Lea Salvation Army this Christmas season.thumb.up

It’s amazing to think the Albert Lea community raised more than $40,000 last weekend during a special match day for the Salvation Army.

It goes to show how generous our community is.

Thanks to everyone who contributed, and hopefully it helps the Salvation Army reach its goal.
