After scoring all four goals in a 4-3 home win Tuesday over Faribault, Bergan Lundak of the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team scored the go-ahead goal against Red Wing with less than two minutes left in the second period.
However, the Wingers netted the equalizer early in the third period and edged the Tigers 5-4 Thursday with a goal by Joe Renshaw two minutes into overtime at Prairie Island Arena in Red Wing.
Multiple stat lines were lopsided in Albert Lea’s favor. The Tigers outshot the Wingers 40-24, including 18-7 in the second period. Albert Lea only had two penalties, while Red Wing had 10 infractions. The Wingers were three minutes shy of having two complete periods with a player in the penalty box.
Red Wing scored the only goal in the first period, but Albert Lea fought back 2:23 into the second period with a power-play goal by Mitchell Evans on a pass from Foster Otten.
The Wingers recaptured the lead about four minutes later, but Sam Chalmers tied the score 2-2 with a pass from Michael Savelkoul on a power play.
Brock Carstens gave the Tigers their first lead of the game on a pass from Jackson Goodell 1:18 after Chalmers’ goal.
However, Red Wing (3-2, 3-1 Big Nine) outscored Albert Lea 3-1 from that point on.
Next, the Tigers (2-2, 2-2 Big Nine) and coach Roy Nystrom will play at Rochester Mayo (3-2, 3-1 Big Nine) and coach Lorne Grosso in a battle between the two winningest coaches in the history of high school hockey in Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
