Editorial: Fair Board is meeting demands of the community

As with most music — whether it’s a genre or artist — everyone has different opinions. There is no one performer that everyone will like.
It’s no surprise, then, that there have been people excited for the announcement that Ted Nugent will perform at the Freeborn County Fair, as well as people who aren’t as thrilled.
There’s no way to please everyone, but we feel the Freeborn County Fair Board has done its best to appeal to the broadest audience possible. After getting more and more requests in recent years for a non-country act, the Fair Board delivered.
While the entertainment possibilities seem endless, booking the bands can not be an easy feat. There may be genres or performers that the Fair Board would like to book, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will get to book those acts. Many factors come into play, such as schedules and, of course, money.
The Fair Board has done a good job each year, usually booking one night of entertainment that is not country music. This year they were able to line up entertainment that reaches newer crowds than previous years. High profile performers draw guests from all over southern Minnesota and beyond, and that is what Ted Nugent will do. He will bring people in who will spend money at the fair, and possibly elsewhere in Albert Lea or Freeborn County.
It’s hard to tell whether those upset with Ted Nugent performing this year feel that way because of some of his lyrics, his political views or both. Again, both of those things are something people will always disagree on, and that’s OK.
Country music is not for everyone. That’s fine. Ted Nugent may not be for everyone. That’s fine, too. We don’t all have to agree, and we never will. There will never be one single performance that we all agree with. The Freeborn County Fair promotes “The six best days of summer.” If there is a day you don’t want to attend, you have five other days to choose from.
We commend the Fair Board for doing its best to make the fair have as much appeal as possible, and for working year-round to do so. It’s easy to sit back and critique some of the choices made, but we know that any plans the Fair Board makes are not done so lightly, and that a lot of time and effort goes into every aspect of the Freeborn Country Fair.
As always, the Tribune will provide in-depth coverage of the goings-on at the fair, including every headline performer at the Grandstand. We hope to see you there, but again, that’s your choice.
