Geneva Cancer Run scheduled for 5th year

GENEVA — Mark your calendars. The Geneva Cancer Run has been scheduled for June 11.
The event, which is in its fifth year, will begin at 11 a.m. outside Geneva Bar and Grill. Registration will be from 9 to 10:50 a.m. to allow for an 11 a.m. start.
According to DeeAnn Randall of Austin, one of the event’s organizers, there will be two or three stops along the way, including one for lunch. While the route has yet to be determined, she anticipates the drive to be approximately 110 miles, with the group returning to Geneva at about 4:30 p.m.
Last year, about 95 motorcyclists and five cars were part of the drive, despite the fact it was raining.
“We have a lot of people who hate cancer,” she laughed.
More events will follow in a tent that will be set up outside the bar.
Silent and live auctions will take place once the riders return and two different bands have been scheduled to play at the event. Rush Hour will play at 7 p.m. and will be followed by Ripdoozers at 9 p.m. A raffle has also been added to the list of events this year, which Randall hopes will allow them to meet or exceed last year’s proceeds of $13,000.
“We do give a little money to research, but our main mission is to help people while they’re going through treatment and are having economic hardship from all the extra expenses and probably unable to work,” Randall said.
Money is distributed to local families within about a 30-mile radius of Geneva. She estimated that over the last four years they have helped about 40 different families.
The event is very important to the Geneva native, who started the event with her sons Jake and Andy Jenson, both of Geneva.
“It’s important to help people and that’s what it’s all about,” she said.
Randall has lost her grandparents and her best friend to the disease, and plans to continue to help organize the run until she can’t do it anymore or until a cure is found.
More information about the run will be released closer to the time of the event.
