United South Central baseball stays perfect in Gopher Conference

 

WELLS — The Rebels were too much for the Eagles to handle.

The United South Central baseball team defeated Maple River 7-2 Thursday at Thompson Park. The win extended the Rebels’ record to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the Gopher Conference.

The Rebels and the Eagles kept Thursday’s game close, with both teams scoring two runs in the first. The score stayed tied until the fourth inning, when the Rebels put up three runs, followed with two more in the fifth inning.

Ryan Kloos recorded the win on the mound for United South Central. In his 6 2/3-inning appearance, the junior gave up just two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking two. Trevor Stencel was credited with a save in his last-inning appearance.

“I thought Ryan Kloos pitched very well tonight,” said United South Central coach Pat Frank. “It’s a good conference win.”

Stencel led the Rebels’ offense, going 3-4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Kloos, Derek Herman and Mitch Harpestad each scored runs for the Rebels; while Kloos, Herman, Jordan Kirkiede, Harpestad and Kyle Brandt each picked up RBIs, as well.

“I think the kids are competing hard,” Frank said. “We’re improving every game.”

Next, United South Central goes on the road to play Blue Earth at 4:30 p.m. today.
