Tigers start season off right with win over Falcons

After having their first three games postponed due to weather, the Tigers finally got to play the field Tuesday — and they did not disappoint.
The Albert Lea baseball team went on the road to defeat Faribault 12-2 Tuesday.
Albert Lea coach Joe Sczublewski highlighted his team’s “errorless” defense as a major driving force behind Tuesday’s success.
“It was fantastic to see in our opening game,” he said.
Sczublewski noted that shortstop Jake Thompson made some “sensational” plays and first baseman Mason Hammer looked “outstanding” while leading Albert Lea’s defensive efforts. Sczublewski credited the two seniors with making a key double play to take the Falcons out of the game for good.
Senior Jake Kilby was on the mound for the Tigers, and gave up just two earned runs on one hit. He also walked five and struck out three in the five-inning game.
Offensively, Albert Lea didn’t have any weak spots up and down the order.
“Up and down, the lineup hit well and ran bases well,” Sczublewski said. “It was definitely a good start to the season.”
Next, Albert Lea (1-0 overall, 1-0 Big Nine Conference) will head to Mankato West to play the Scarlets (1-0, 0-0) at 5 p.m. Thursday. Mankato West is coming off of a 13-3 victory over Bloomington Jefferson from Saturday.
