Tigers advance, but not far enough

It has been a little over one week since Albert Lea’s boys’ tennis team had its season prematurely ended against Lakeville South.
Thursday was another opportunity as the individual tournament started, and the Tigers were hoping to make some noise.
Each team entered two individuals and two doubles, and Schafer Overgaard and Austin Dulitz got the nod for the Tigers in the individual round.
Overgaard impressed early on and won his first match 6-3, 6-3 over Austin’s No. 1 player.
His second matchup was a little less favorable. Overgaard matched up with Rochester Mayo’s Sebastian Vile, the No. 2 ranked player in the state.
Overgaard battled, but Vile was able to outlast him.
Dulitz took down Austin’s Jens Ourada (6-2, 6-0), before falling to Lakeville South’s No. 2 ranked player.
On the doubles’ side, Taylor Herfindahl and Foster Otten teamed up. They quickly dispatched the conference champion duo from Owatonna (6-1, 6-4).
They would fall in the second round to Lakeville South.
Nikk Christianson and Sam Ehrhardt won 7-5, 7-5 over a team from Austin, but lost to the No. 1 seeded team from Mayo.
Overall, Tigers coach Tom Dyrdal was pleased with the performance of his players, depsite none of them being able to advance.
“We had a great day with all our players advancing to round two,” Dyrdal said. “(Austin) moved over from doubles to singles and played a great singles match. (Schafer) was steady as he as been all year in defeating Austin’s top player.
“(Taylor) and (Foster) had been playing singles all year, but looked like they had been playing doubles together all year in beating a tough Owatonna pair, and it was fun to have (Nikk) and (Sam) pull out their match to complete the sweep of round one.
The Tigers had a great season and finished with a record of 10-6.
“It was a fun, record-setting year for the team,” Dyrdal said. “We will definitely miss our graduating seniors.”
