Albert Lea has an opportunity next month to host the U.S. Military All-Stars.
U.S. Military All-Stars began during a visit to the Naval Aviation Museum by President George H.W. Bush, according to the organization’s website. Bush discussed the positive impact baseball had on morale during World War II, and his comments started the development of military baseball in the modern era.
The U.S. Military All-Stars competes in 35 to 60 games annually while providing support to individual Wounded Warriors, State Department, Department of Defense and recruiting.
In addition to playing in a big game on July 14 at Hayek Field against some Albert Lea standouts playing in a team called the Albert Lea Lakers, the All-Stars team will host various events in town, including meet-and-greets and a burger basket fundraiser. Proceeds go to support veterans programs.
Among these events, the team is looking to honor World War II veterans for their service. If you know someone who is a World War II veteran, contact Dave Mullenbach at 383-5866.
The Tribune is designing a program with all of the events that will print in the paper on July 12, and 1,500 copies will be available at the game.
