Editorial: Educate yourself about the candidates

Albert Lea residents have been fortunate this year to see several people step forward to run for three open City Council positions.
With the primary election quickly approaching on Aug. 9 for both wards 1 and 5, now is the time for residents to learn where the candidates stand on issues and how they plan to help the city move forward during the next four years.
One opportunity to do this will be during forums on Tuesday hosted by the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce’s governmental affairs committee in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.
Facing off in the 1st Ward are candidates George Gillespie, Craig Havener, Harold Kamrath and Rich Murray. Running for the 5th Ward are candidates Robert Rasmussen, Paul Shea and Marcelino Talamantes.
The 1st Ward forum will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the 5th Ward forum to follow at 7:30 p.m.
People are invited to submit questions, and the candidates will receive the opportunity to respond to each.
If you are unable to attend the forums in person but still want to submit a question, email alfccoc@albertlea.org.
Now’s your chance to ask — whether it’s about taxes, streets, development or another topic — and to become educated.
The forums will be broadcast live on the government channel — Charter Communications channel 180 — and on KCPI Radio.
