Editorial: Grant to keep technology at library current

In a day of advancing technology, we applaud the Albert Lea Public Library for its efforts to provide up-to-date resources for its patrons.

The library this week found out it was awarded almost $73,000 in grant funding to supply mobile hotspot devices and tablets. Specifically, the funds will provide 60 mobile hotspots and 25 mobile iPads. People will be able check them out for up to three weeks at a time.

The grant funding comes after the library earlier this year instituted a pilot program to identify gaps in internet service throughout the county.

According to the city, more than one-third of students in kindergarten through 12th grade from low-income and rural homes are unable to access the internet at home for homework and education.

Library officials have previously estimated 21 percent of Albert Lea residents are not connected to the internet at home.

In an internet use survey from January, city officials found that 45 percent of respondents were somewhat or very likely to checkout a Wi-Fi hotspot device from the library.

These days, internet is not simply a luxury; it has become an essential service.

People need internet not only to talk with friends and family but to pay bills, but to continue their education and apply for jobs.

Thanks to the Albert Lea Public Library staff for your forward thinking, and we look forward to seeing the success of this program.
