Up: To 2016 Albert Lea High School Homecoming Queen Becca Schei and King Tristan Johnston.
The high school gym erupted with cheers Friday as the 2016 queen and king were announced in front of students, family and others at the annual Albert Lea High School Homecoming Coronation. We applaud the students for setting aside their differences and selecting Schei, who has Down syndrome. After hearing her name, she jumped with excitement and grinned from ear to ear before hopping onto Johnston’s lap for a photo in front of a crowd full of eager parents
The recognition made not only her day but ours.
Up: To the Albert Lea football team.
It has been 32 games since the Albert Lea High School football team won a game, and it couldn’t have come at a more exciting time than on Homecoming night.
Congratulations to the team for giving big offensive plays and a stout defense against Tri-City United on Friday.
The Tigers got a touchdown from three different players in the victory, and the defense forced three turnovers in the victory.
We hope this is only the beginning of something exciting for Albert Lea football.
Down: To rising damage estimates from heavy rains last month in Freeborn County.
Though the worst of the flooding is behind us, now area residents are forced to begin cleaning up.
As of Friday, the county alone is projected to have an estimated $1.7 million in public infrastructure damages from the heavy rains Sept. 21. That does not include residential or business damages.
County officials said this week that nearly 240 residential properties have damage in the county, and that number is only expected to grow.
If you were fortunate enough not to receive damage yourself, consider volunteering this weekend to help others who did. According to the United Way of Freeborn County, there are approximately 50 homes that need to have basements cleaned out this weekend. Volunteers met Saturday morning and are asked to meet at noon Sunday in the back of Skyline Plaza. Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed toe shoes and to bring an ID.
