Everywhere we turn in society, we are surrounded by people who, by profession, provide services or goods for all of us.
There are waiters and waitresses, delivery people, housekeepers, taxi drivers, hairstylists, newspaper carriers — and the list goes on and on.
While it is proper etiquette to thank some of these people with a monetary gift each time they provide their service, for others it is courteous to tip annually. What better time to do so than during the holidays?
These people work diligently to provide their service and more often than not go above and beyond to do so.
What is considered a proper compensation? While tipping practices vary widely across the country, we suggest rewarding those who provide exceptional service.
According to www.businessinsider.com, the following annual amounts are recommended:
• Mail carrier: $15 to $20
• Newspaper carrier: $15 to $25
• Personal trainer: $20 to $50
• Housekeeper: one week’s pay
For those who should be compensated each time they provide a service, the website recommends the following:
• Waiter: 15 percent for adequate service; 20 percent for exceptional service
• Delivery person: 10 percent, $2 minimum
• Room service at a hotel: $5 minimum
• Housekeeper at a hotel: $2 to $5 per night
• Cab driver: 10 percent, $2 to $5 minimum
• Hair stylist: 10 to 20 percent
• Manicurist: 15 percent
These people are hard workers, and most make a point to be dedicated to their customers. Go out of your way today to thank them for their efforts.
