Sports Memories by Chuck Anderson

50 years ago: 1967

• In its opening meet of the year, the Albert Lea High School track team defeated Fairmont 112-26. Double winners for the Tigers were Darrel Gavle in the shot put and the discus and Craig Pederson in the pole vault and the 220 yard dash. Also winning for the Tigers were Dan Doty in the high jump, John Vollum in the high hurdles and Chuck Pappas in the long jump.

• The Northwood-Kensett High School boys’ golf team lost to Mason City Newman 184-167. Scores for the Vikings were Bob Johnsrud (42), Bob Lyman (43), Bruce Nelson (48) and Rick Anderson and mark Johnson (50) each.

• The Wells High School baseball team raised its record to 2-0 with a 7-3 win over New Richland. Dave Ender doubled for the Wildcats and Tom Bergner tripled for the Cardinals.

25 years ago: 1992

• In a 10-inning softball game, ALHS defeated Mankato East 4-3. Julie Mullenbach and Amy Beese led the Tigers with two hits each.

• The ALHS boys’ golf team opened its season with a 157-164 win over Waseca. Scores for the Tigers were Phil Schmidt (37), Chris Boysen (39), Todd Intihar and Troy Neist (40) each.

• The Glenville-Emmons boys’ golf team defeated Alden-Conger 183-202 at Oak View Golf Course in Freeborn. For the Wolverines Chad Mickelson was the medalist with a (38). The Knights were led by Chris Miller with a (41).

• The Albert Lea Family Y wallyball team of Tom Dyrdal, Randy Skophammer and Greg Wilson won the Intermediate Division Title at the Minnesota  state wallyball tournament.

10 years ago: 2007

• Hunter Tuveson, an 11-year-old boy from Albert Lea, placed second at the National Archery Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky.

• The G-E baseball team defeated Spring Grove 11-0 behind the one-hit pitching Bridger Bjorklund. Isaiah Iverson had three hits and four RBI and Aaron Wuerflein hit a three-run homer for the Wolverines.

• United South Central shut out Medford 13-0. The Rebels were led by Eric Grunzke’s three-run homer and two hits each by Jake Bonsack and Chris Yost.
