Seniors come through on Senior Night

It hasn’t been an easy last month for the Albert Lea softball team.
However, on their Senior Night, the Tigers put together the pieces of the puzzle in a 6-4 win over Stewartville.
“This was a huge win for us tonight,” Tigers coach Casey Kortz said. “After battling the last few weeks and coming into our last home game tonight, walking away with a win is something we are very proud of.”
Things didn’t start off well for the Tigers, though. In the first inning, Stewartville jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
But Albert Lea came back in the second inning. Kathryn Flaherty led off with a single. Bethany Tennis and Taysha Sternhagen both followed with doubles to tie the game.
In the third inning, Alana Skarstad scored the third run for the Tigers.
Down 3-2, Stewartville scored two runs to go up 4-3. That would be all Albert Lea would allow, though.
The Tigers pushed across three runs in the fifth inning. Madeline Fjermestad started the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Liana Schallock walked, and then Flaherty lined a single to the outfield that scored Fjermestad. Tennis singled to load the bases and Samantha Skarstad put the icing on the cake with a two-run double to give the Tigers their final tally of the night.
It was team work that ended a month-long, 13-game losing streak.
“The team worked together tonight, picked each other up when we made a few errors and was aggressive at the plate,” Kortz said. “When we play our defense and offense the way I know we are capable of, we can compete with anyone.”
Albert Lea will play its final regular season game against Mankato East on Thursday.
