An Albert Lea woman charged after reportedly writing a fraudulent check worth hundreds of dollars in September was placed on supervised probation for up to five years on Thursday in Freeborn County District Court.
Wendy Jean Woodson, 55, received a nearly 1 1/2-year stayed prison sentence after she pleaded guilty to felony offering a forged check in May. Woodson was sentenced to 30 days in jail, and she was given credit for five days served.
Court documents state Woodson was charged after a detective with the Albert Lea Police Department received a report of check forgery Oct. 4 at a business in Albert Lea. Woodson reportedly altered a corporate check that had already been returned to another person, increasing the amount of the check to $664.71. Woodson reportedly deposited $200 into her bank account and took $464.71 in cash. She returned later in the day of Sept. 29 and withdrew the remaining $200.
In a separate case, Woodson was placed on probation for two years Thursday for a gross misdemeanor charge of issuing a dishonored check.
Three other cases Woodson faced charges from were settled.
In one file, one gross misdemeanor count of issuing a dishonored check was dismissed, and in a second file, one count of offering a forged check and one count of issuing a dishonored check were dismissed in a case that began after Woodson reportedly cashed a $389.90 check made out to herself Aug. 8, 2016, at an Albert Lea business. The check was returned by a bank for being altered/fictitious. In a third file, one count of felony offering a forged check was dismissed.
