Albert Lea Floats

The Albert Lea Lakes Foundation and the city of Albert Lea are partnering to host this year’s Albert Lea Floats from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is a nonmotorized floating festival to promote the use of Albert Lea’s natural resources — the lakes.

The event will take place at Frank Hall Park and Albert Lea Lake. Those wanting to participate in Albert Lea Floats will be able to use kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, hamboards and bicycles at no cost. Those who own a personal, non-motorized floating vessel are invited to bring the vessel to the event.

Food vendors, including 112 On Broadway and Renee Made Ice Cream, will be at the event on Saturday. Kiddie train rides will be available for children, and the Pelican Breeze II will take a cruise at 1 p.m. The cost of the Pelican Breeze II ride is $5 per rider.

The Albert Lea Anglers will also be in attendance.

The Looney Lutherans

The Looney Lutherans will make their way to the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center this weekend for performances that are sure to hit home for many Midwesterners.

The group is a trio of wacky gals on tour promoting their new cookbook and Lutheran lifestyle guide entitled “Use Your Food: A guide to healthy living inside and out — from our kitchen to yours, eat like a Lutheran!”

There will be two performances — the first is slated for 7:30 p.m. Saturday and the second will be at 3 p.m. Sunday. The shows are expected to last about 90 minutes.

All material in “Looney Lutherans” is original, family-friendly and interactive.

The cost of tickets is $15 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Marion Ross Performing Arts Center is at 147 N. Broadway Ave. in downtown Albert Lea.

Movie in the Park

The city of Albert Lea Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor an outdoor movie Friday at the Edgewater Park Bandshell. For no cost, “The Secret Life of Pets” will be shown at 8:30 p.m.

The movie is expected to last until about 10 p.m.

Those interested in attending the outdoor movie are encouraged to find a seat on a bench in the park or bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on during the movies.

Emmons Borderfest

Emmons will host the annual Borderfest festival this weekend with a collection of summer activities and entertainment.

There will be a city-wide garage sale throughout the weekend starting at 5 p.m. Friday and lasting until 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Johnny Holms Street Band will provide entertainment for a street dance at 8:30 p.m. on Main Street Friday night.

Saturday will consist of a co-ed volleyball tournament from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gateway Park, the Border Parade at 10:30 a.m. and a bean bag tournament at 11 a.m. — both on Main Street.

An antique tractor show is slated for 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday with registration from 10 a.m. to noon. Awards for the tractor show will be at 3 p.m.

A pork chop supper will be served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion.

“The Voice” finalist Casey Muessigmann will perform at 8:30 p.m. Saturday on Main Street.

Hip-Hop Homecoming

Six artists will take the stage in a performance dubbed “Hip-Hop Homecoming.”

Local rappers LiMiT, Levi West, Sota Red, DaboFlai, Z3L and Murphy will perform with the goal of bringing their love of hip-hop to Albert Lea.

The collaboration of the local rappers will be only half the fun Saturday night as there will also be an open mic session, rap battle and a skit at the event.

Hip-Hop Homecoming is hosted by Luis Hidalgo. Isaiah Kessel of DJ Kessel Entertainment in Albert Lea will provide the sound for the rappers performing at the event.

The Hip-Hop Homecoming event will be from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Big Island Bar Event Center attached to America’s Best Value Inn. The event center is at 2306 E. Main St.

Tickets for the event cost $8 at the door and the event is open to all ages.
