The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team came into its game against Austin on Saturday hoping to extend a two-game win streak.
Despite ending the first period tied, the Tigers were unable to get the win on Albert Lea’s annual Hockey Day, as the team fell to the Packers 5-2.
The Tigers fell into a bit of a hole early on as the Packers scored their first goal just four and a half minutes into the opening period. Freshman Alli Dulitz, however, would tie the game back at one with her goal less than two minutes remaining in the first. Her goal was assisted by sophomore Katie Steven and eighth-grader Esther Yoon.
The Packers would hop right back out to a one-goal lead early in the second period. The Tigers would stumble at the end of the second after a goal from the Packers with 12 seconds remaining. Starting goalie Maddie Schneider would leave the game with an injury after the goal and not return.
The shell-shocked Tigers would allow another goal by the Packers with just 1.9 seconds left on the clock in the second period.
Down 4-1, the Tigers needed to score quickly to get themselves back in the game. Freshman Jaiden Venem answered the call with an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the final period.
The Packers, however, would go back on the offensive and score their fifth goal just a few minutes later.
The Tigers fall to 6-14 this season and will look to get back on the winning path Monday when they host the 13-7-2 Luverne Cardinals.
