A man already in prison for second-degree murder pleaded guilty Wednesday to escaping custody while in a transport van in Freeborn County in December 2015.
Todd Larry Tennin, 33, pleaded guilty to felony escape from custody. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison last April for second-degree murder and is serving his sentence at Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater.
On Dec. 9, 2015, while riding in a transport van just west of Minnesota Highway 13, Tennin broke a rear window from the vehicle and escaped.
Tennin was being transported to Ramsey County to face the second-degree murder charge at the time of the incident.
An extensive search was immediately initiated by the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and the Albert Lea Police Department.
Tennin was located and taken back into custody without further incident near the SuperAmerica gas station, at the intersection of Interstate 90 and Highway 13. He was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea with injuries deemed not life-threatening.
Any prison time Tennin would serve on the file would be concurrent with the sentence he is already serving, said Freeborn County Attorney David Walker.
Tennin was charged with gross misdemeanor third-degree criminal damage to property, but that charge is expected to be dismissed at sentencing April 12.
