Senior Micah Coffey led the No. 25 Gophers baseball team to a 40-run outburst in its two-game rain-shortened series sweep of Purdue last weekend and earned the title of Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts.
Coffey batted .556 for the weekend (5-for-9), reaching base in 9-of-13 plate appearances, adding three walks and a hit-by-pitch to get on base at a .692 clip. He drove in 10 runs on the weekend, collecting five RBI in each game. He is the first Gopher since Derek McCallum in 2009 to record 10 or more RBI in a two-game span. He scored five runs on the weekend, adding a triple and a home run as he slugged 1.111.
Minnesota’s last Big Ten Player of the Week selection was Terrin Vavra earlier this season on February 16. Coffey earned the conference’s weekly honors last season on May 8, 2017. This week, Coffey shares the honor with Co-Player and Freshman of the Week Jesse Franklin of Michigan.
