Albert Lea student recognized
Emma Iverson, the daughter of Chad and Jayne Iverson of Hayward, was named to the spring 2017-18 academic year dean’s list at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. Iverson is a 2016 graduate of Albert Lea High School.
In order to be named to the dean’s list, a student must carry at least 14 academic credits and maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average.
Albert Lea native recognized
Anna Boettcher, the daughter of Todd and Cassie Boettcher of Albert Lea, was named to the spring 2017-18 academic year dean’s list at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. Boettcher is a 2017 graduate of Albert Lea High School.

Jessica Barnick of Alden graduated from the University of the Cumberlands with a Masters of Science in justice administration.
Student recognized at U of M-Crookston
Dustin Petersen of Albert Lea was recognized with the Outstanding Communication Student Award during the student awards ceremony at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. Student achievement was recognized during the annual awards celebration in April. The program highlighted outstanding students in all departments and for volunteer service
College releases honor list
Anne Mellet of Austin and Jacob Passer of Keister were named to the spring 2017-18 honors list at Iowa Lakes Community College. Passer was named to the president’s list and Mellet to the dean’s list. Spring semester students who have achieved a 3.25 grade point average or better are recognized by inclusion on the dean’s list. Those with a 4.00 average are on the president’s list.
Luther College celebrates commencement
Luther College of Decorah celebrated commencement May 27 in Carlson Stadium. BJ Nichols, Luther alumnus and partner at Ernst & Young, gave the commencement address. The ceremony was streamed live at stream.luther.edu.
Nichols, a native of Decorah attended Luther graduating in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in management and Spanish. He received his Masters of Business Administration from Babson College in 2004.
Albert Lea native graduates
Laura Piper, daughter of Steve and Susan Piper of Albert Lea, received a Bachelor of Arts from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago on May 12. Piper, a 2013 graduate from Albert Lea High School, graduated from the communication studies major program.
University of Jamestown releases dean’s list
Bryn Woodside of Albert Lea has been named to the spring 2018 dean’s list at the University of Jamestown.
Area native graduates
Tyler Egge, the son of Dwaine and Beth Egge, graduated summa cum laude from Concordia College in Moorhead with a major in music.
SDSU releases dean’s list
Allison Grandstrand of Albert Lea, Melissa Malakowsky of Hartland, Jasmine Piepho of New Richland and Colin Wegner of Wells have been named to the South Dakota State University dean’s list for the spring semester of the 2017-18 school year.
Area students graduate
Iowa State University’s commencement ceremony took place May 29. The following students from the area participated in the ceremony: Haley Schroader of Albert Lea graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in child, adult and family services; Emmons native Sarah Orban received a Bachelor of Science in animal science; and Tryggve Rogers from Lake Mills received a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering.
Area students recognized
The following area students have been named to the dean’s list at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for the spring semester of the 2017-18 academic year: Torrie Stencil of Hartland and Abby Christopherson of New Richland. Qualification for the dean’s list is limited to students who have attained outstanding academic achievement. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must have earned no less than a 3.5 semester grade point average and carried a minimum of 12 credits.
UMD releases dean’s list
The following students were placed on the 2018 spring UMD dean’s list: Albert Lea native Kassi Hardies, Miranda Theusch of Alden and Emily Eder of Geneva. Students who are recognized on the dean’s list have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or better in the spring semester
Albert Lea native recognized
Timothy Furland of Albert Lea was named to the dean’s list for academic achievement during the spring 2018 semester at University of Wisconsin-Superior. To be named on the dean’s list, students must have completed 12 degree-seeking semester credits and achieved at least a 3.50 grade point average.
Area student awarded scholarship
Alexander Goodmanson, son of Phillip Goodmanson and Julie Goodmanson of Albert Lea, is the recipient of an Excellence Scholarship and Diversity Scholarship to attend Concordia College-Moorhead. Goodmanson will participate in the CREDO Honors program. He is a 2018 graduate of Albert Lea Senior High School.
UW-Eau Claire releases dean’s list
Zachary Zabrocki of Alden was named to the 2017-18 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire spring semester dean’s list. UW-Eau Claire named 2,247 students to its spring semester dean’s list.
Area students recognized
Taylor Willis of Albert Lea was named to the NDSU 2018 spring semester dean’s list. Students who qualify for the dean’s list must be enrolled in a least 12 class credits for the spring semester and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Iowa releases dean’s list
Area students have been named to the dean’s list at the University of Iowa. Albert Lea natives Maryah Dulaney-Hernandez, Kyle Neidermeiier, Leah Osmonson, Schafer Overgaard, Amy Sanderson, Haley Schroader, Lauren Sorenson, Karina Stripe and Camille Tewes; Northwood natives Rosita Cansino, Tegan Otter, Brett Halvorson, Cody Haugo, Jenna Jorgensen, Mary Stoneking and Kaitlyn Varner; Amber Klein, Riley Kloos and Dustin Schultz from Wells; Sarah Orban from Emmons; and Madison Erickson from Alden were named to the list. Students named to the dean’s List must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale while taking a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded coursework.
MSU-Moorhead releases dean’s list
Michael Odmundson of Glenville and Luke Sundblad of Albert Lea have been named to the 2018 academic dean’s list at MSU-Moorhead. To qualify, students must be in degree-seeking status and maintain a 3.25 or higher grade point average while completing a minimum of 12 credits.
Albert Lea native named to board
North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum appointed Devils Lake attorney Daniel Traynor, New Rockford-Sheyenne Superintendent Jill Louters and Williston State College student Ashley Thornton to the North Dakota Board of Higher Education. Traynor is a shareholder in Traynor Law Firm in Devils Lake, engaged in general litigation practice. Louters, an Albert Lea native, has served as superintendent of the New Rockford-Sheyenne School District since 2012. She earned a bachelor’s degree in social studies teacher education from Concordia College in Moorhead, a master’s degree in education administration from Mankato State University and a doctorate in educational leadership from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. Traynor and Louters each began serving a four-year term on the Board of Higher Education on July 1. The North Dakota Senate still must approve their appointment to the board as of press time. The Board of Higher Education has eight voting members appointed by the governor, including a student member and two non-voting members who represent the North Dakota university system faculty and staff. The board oversees the system’s 11 public colleges and universities.
Area student receives masters
Shelby Dietrich from Lake Mills received her master’s from Concordia with a Master of Arts in teaching.
Area students graduate
Albert Lea natives Andrew Ehrhardt and Anne Ladwig graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College on June 2. Ehrhardt earned his degree in psychology and Ladwig in management. They were among the 520 students to graduate with Bachelor of Arts degrees from Gustavus Adolphus College during the school’s annual commencement exercises.
Concordia releases dean’s list
Albert Lea natives Tyler Egge, son of Dwaine and Beth Egge; and Solveig Lange, daughter of Christma and Todd Lange, were named to the Concordia College spring dean’s list. Clair Bias, daughter of Linda and Brian Bias from Alden; and James Dundas, son of Mark and Sue Dundas from Wells, were also honored. To qualify for this designation, students had to carry a minimum of 12 semester credits and have a grade point average of at least a 3.7.
Area students recognized
Wartburg College has recognized 477 students who were named to the 2018 winter/may term dean’s list. Those honored include Alexandra Grow of Lake Mills and Haley Harms of Albert Lea. To qualify, students must earn a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or above in at least five course credits during the terms. Four of the five course credits have to be graded with a traditional letter grade.
Gustavus Adolphus releases dean’s list
The spring semester dean’s list at Gustavus Adolphus College has been released. To qualify, students must earn a 3.7 grade point average or higher for the semester ending in May 2018. The following local students were named to the dean’s list at Gustavus Adolphus College: Anne Ladwig of Albert Lea, Bethany Tennis of Hayward, and New Richland natives Maci Surat and Spencer Tollefson.
Area student recognized
Amelia Evenson of Lake Mills was recently honored at Buena Vista University’s annual student recognition dinner. Evenson received an Academic Excellence Award as a fourth-year student. The Academic Excellence Award is given to students on the Storm Lake campus whose cumulative grade point average is 3.75 or greater, representing approximately the top 10 percent of each class.
L.M. native recognized
Tanner Jensen of Lake Mills was honored at Buena Vista University’s annual student recognition dinner. Jensen received an Academic Excellence Award as a fourth-year student. The Academic Excellence Award is given to students on the Storm Lake campus whose cumulative grade point average is 3.75 or greater, representing approximately the top 10 percent of each class. Jensen received a Student Organization Leader Award for his role in the Anime & Gaming Society, one of more than 46 organizations available on campus. Jensen was also a recipient of the Marjorie Holmes Award. Storm Lake native and best-selling novelist Marjorie Holmes donated a gift to establish an endowed literary award. Each year, declared English majors with a 3.0 grade point average may submit a folder of analytical or creative written work to the Buena Vista University Department of English for consideration.
UMR releases chancellor’s list
The University of Minnesota-Rochester announced Sarah Niebuhr was named to the chancellor’s list for her outstanding academic work during the spring 2018 semester. Students receive the distinction by earning a grade point average of 3.666 or higher and completing a minimum of 12 credits.
Local student named to dean’s list
St. Cloud State University named Taylor Steckelberg of Wells to the 2018 spring semester dean’s list. More than 1,200 students from SCSU were placed on the 2018 spring semester dean’s list. To be eligible for the honor, students earned a grade point average of 3.75 or higher during the spring semester.
