Two businesses failed annual tobacco compliance checks conducted this week by the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.

Nine establishments were checked, and the businesses that failed the checks were Short Stop in Glenville and Gopher Stop in Clarks Grove, according to a news release.

During the checks, Sheriff’s Office deputies supervise students between 15 and 17 years old who attempt to purchase tobacco products.

State law requires law enforcement conduct compliance checks on establishments that sell tobacco at least once a year.

According to the release, clerks selling tobacco to minors are issued a citation for the first violation, which carries a maximum penalty of no more than 90 days in jail and a fine up to $1,000.

Administrative penalties on the business can include a fine. Repeated violations can result in a possible suspension of a license to sell tobacco.
