After five terms, the sitting county commissioner for District 2 is set to return for a sixth.
Incumbent Dan Belshan kept the District 2 seat for the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners with over 72 percent of the votes Tuesday, beating opponent Ken Osmonson, who brought in just over 27 percent of votes.
“It’s really an honor for me to be re-elected,” Belshan said.
He said he will do his best for the constituents of District 2, as well as the whole county.
For his upcoming term, Belshan said he wants to see the board address property taxes.
“They just can’t keep going up like they have been,” Belshan said.
He also would like to see the area make further strides in finding another health care provider after Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea moved many of its inpatient services to Austin.
“We just can’t let it go,” he said.
Furthermore, according to Belshan, the county roads need work to better service the agricultural economy, which uses the roads to bring goods to market.
“I think we can do a lot better on the roads just by using normal maintenance that we haven’t been using,” he said.
Osmonson said he was disappointed to lose the race.
“There is a need for some needed change, for change, and hopefully that some of the issues will be considered by Dan (Belshan) in the future, that he follows what he says that he was doing rather than his actions — what he has been doing,” Osmonson said.
He wished the board luck for the upcoming term.
“It’s not an easy job, I do understand that, but one of the things they do is they represent everybody, and hopefully that they keep that in mind that it is a selfless service and they maintain that view,” Osmonson said.
