Freeborn County Sheriff Kurt Freitag is requesting a more than 22 percent pay increase for 2019.

Freitag asked the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners in a workshop earlier this week to approve his 2019 salary at $112,865, a more than $20,000 increase from his current $92,403 salary.

Freitag’s requested increase is the largest by Freeborn County elected officials for 2019:

• Freeborn County Auditor-Treasurer Pat Martinson is requesting an $87,400 salary, a 5.12 percent increase from her $83,143 pay.

• Freeborn County Attorney David Walker is requesting a $113,400 salary, a 4.49 percent increase from his $108,522 pay.

• Recorder Kelly Callahan is requesting a $73,728 salary, a 5.52 percent increase from his $69,867 pay.

Administrator Thomas Jensen said the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners will vote on the salaries during the board’s Dec. 11 meeting.

Though District 5 Commissioner Mike Lee spoke highly of the work Freitag does, he does not support a 22 percent increase.

“He’s doing a good job,” Lee said. “Twenty-two percent is a big jump.”
