Editorial: Stay safe, warm this week in extreme cold

This week is expected to bring temperatures and wind chills colder than many of us have ever experienced.
While staying warm will be a primary focus for all, it is important to do so safely.
The Minnesota Department of Commerce warned Monday to make sure your heating system is working properly, as faulty home heating equipment is a leading cause of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Check that outside furnace vents aren’t blocked by snow or ice.
Make sure to vent space heaters that burn with an open flame to the outside, and make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors work. The Commerce Department states these are essential safeguards to warn you of a fire or malfunction with a furnace, water heater, fireplace or stove. Test batteries monthly and change them once a year.
If you depend on propane or heating oil, make sure your fuel tank is well supplied. Refill the tank when it drops to 25 or 30 percent full.
If you’re in need of assistance for heating bills, Minnesota’s Energy Assistance Program offers grants. The Commerce Department states last winter’s average grant per low-income household was about $545.
We encourage residents to take a few extra minutes to plan for safety this week to avoid any potential problems.
Stay indoors when possible, and doublecheck that your heating systems are working properly.
