ST. PAUL — United South Central senior Blake Legred came into Saturday morning with a shot to make school history, becoming the first United South Central athlete to win multiple state championships in any sport.
A close decision win in the championship semifinals propelled him into the 138-pound title match, where he will have the chance to secure his second state championship Saturday night.
In his semifinal matchup, the No. 5-ranked Legred met No. 4 Tyler Bents of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.
Neither wrestler could gain a leg up on the other throughout the first period, ending in a 0-0 tie. Legred started the second period in the covering position and was able to ride out Bents the entire two minutes, ending the second still tied 0-0. In the third period, Legred scored an escape point in the opening seconds. After it looked like he might suffer a takedown with less than 20 seconds to go, he turned it in his favor, scoring the takedown himself and riding it out to a 3-0 decision win.
Legred advances to the 138-pound final Saturday evening, where he will meet No. 1 Mark Buringa of St. Charles.
