Editorial: Albert Lea fortunate to have its fire department

All it takes is one day with multiple calls like Monday to remind us how vital it is to have a full-time fire department in Albert Lea.
First, it was a house fire on Ethel Avenue caused by a short in an electrical outlet. Then, there was a report of a boiler on fire on Plainview Lane. Fast-forward a few hours, and then came the fire at Pro Trucking, where multiple departments were called in to assist.
It’s easy to take for granted the services the firefighters provide until the day you or someone you know needs their help. In addition to responding to fires, firefighters respond to medical calls and automobile crashes and also play a vital role in commercial and rental housing inspections.
These hard-working city employees go to work each day faced with the unknown of what will take place during their day and many times risk their own lives to protect the community.
We thank them for their service.
