Editorial: Hands-free law a step in the right direction

Though it’s too soon to see the effects of Minnesota’s new hands-free law, one thing’s for certain: If even half the people who were using their phones put them down as a result of the new law, that’s already a win.
That means a higher number of motorists who are choosing to be more conscientious and attentive to their surroundings and, in turn, less worried about the distractions that come through their mobile device.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety last week released the number of citations given out during the first week of the new law.
From Aug. 1 through Aug. 7, officers, deputies and troopers cited 678 people statewide for violating the law, with the most citations written in Hennepin County.
Though there have only been a couple of citations issued in Albert Lea and Freeborn County over the last month for violation of the law, it’s clear to see there have certainly been fewer people on their phones when driving at any given time.
Prior to the law, it wasn’t uncommon to drive around and see motorists talking on the phone or texting while driving.
Now, most drivers realize the seriousness of the law — or at least want to avoid a ticket — and are making wiser choices.
We hope this only continues to be the new normal and that the law ultimately results in fewer traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities from distracted driving.
