Editorial: Vandalism affects entire community

There have been several reports of spray-painted buildings over the last few days in Albert Lea, including at private businesses, city parks buildings, the former Albert Lea Township fire station and even the bridge on Main Street over the viaduct.
The damage not only affects the city of Albert Lea and the business owners — who likely have to pay to clean up the damage — but also the entire community whose image is tainted with these off-color, distasteful messages.
We were disappointed to read the reports of this damage, and we hope the community will be vigilant in reporting any additional similar behavior.
We think vandalism of any form shows a lack of respect for others’ property and a lack of pride in the community.
We hope that those responsible for this vandalism, once caught, can take part in some form of community service — whether it be cleaning off the graffiti they spray-painted or another task, such as picking up trash to learn the value and the impact that one person can have.
If anybody has any information on the damage, they can contact the Albert Lea Police Department at 507- 377-5205.
