Individuals from both the NRHEG boys’ and girls’ cross country teams got off to a hot start Friday afternoon in their season-opening meet in Medford.
On the boys’ side, junior Daniel Nydegger took home a first-place finish with a time of 18.32. Junior Caden Deyle and senior Addison Deyle finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth place, respectively — Riewer with a time of 20:57 and Addison with a time of 21:01. Junior Gavin Anderson and sophomore Matthew Mueller were the final scorers for the Panthers, coming in 16th (24:01) and 17th (24:28), respectively.
As a team, the boys’ finished in third place with a combined score of 49.
The girls’ team also had a first-place finisher in senior Micaela Vaale, who finished with a time of 23:49. Eighth grader Annabelle Petsinger came in sixth place with a time of 24:54, junior Torri Vaale finished in seventh place with a time of 25:08 and senior Mia Williams came in 16th place with a time of 29:23.
The girls’ team did not have enough runners to compete as a team.
“The highlight of today was our individuals who won both the boys and girls race,” said head coach Miles Otstot. “Daniel Nydegger and Micaela Vaale picked up where they left off prior to their injuries last season. This was a great first race for them both and they should build on that for the solid year. The rest of the team got a good run out in the first meet of the season and will look to build upon that next week in Stewartville.”
The Panthers will be back in action Thursday afternoon, when they travel to Bear Cave Park in Stewartville.
