Area residents were excited over the weekend to hear that an offer was accepted from the Kohler Foundation to purchase a longstanding Albert Lea landmark that has fallen into disrepair.
The Itasca Rock Garden was built in 1925 by John L. Christensen, and up until recent years, had been a place for both locals and out-of-town residents to visit and explore for senior photos, weddings and anything in between.
Anyone who saw the garden in its glory or even in recent years can testify of Christensen’s craftsmanship and skill. It has become a treasured part of the history of Albert Lea.
We appreciate the descendants of Arthur and Edna Johnson, who owned the property from for 30 years in the 1950s through 1980s, for reaching out to the foundation and letting them know what this project means not only to their family but to all of Albert Lea.
It’s clear the garden has been an important memory for many simply by the wide support received on social media since efforts began to restore it.
Scott Johnson, who led the process for the family, said he thinks one of the main reasons the foundation fought so hard for the project was the community support and the welcoming atmosphere the foundation representatives felt when coming here.
We hope the community can channel this type of support for other efforts in Albert Lea and help businesses or initiatives looking to grow or expand here feel this same welcoming atmosphere.
That enthusiasm can set Albert Lea apart from other cities.
