5 things to do this weekend
Published 7:38 pm Wednesday, December 18, 2019
1. Folk rockin’ fun
The folk rock band Good Morning Bedlam will play a show from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Bend in the Road, 25483 Minnesota Highway 13 in Manchester. Known for their energetic, playful performances and fun twist on the folk music genre, the band will deliver three-part harmonies over a kick-drum beat and some exuberant dance moves. Scott Jasmin will open with original compositions from his “Small-town Songs” collection of Americana music. The concert is free and open to all ages.
2. A merry matinee
Bring the whole family to enjoy a classic Christmas movie at 1 p.m. Saturday at Northbridge Mall in Albert Lea. The special showing is free — popcorn and candy included. Santa will be there to greet his fans, as well. The Christmas program is presented by Northbridge Mall and The Chapel; donations will be accepted to help continue the tradition.
3. Blue Christmas: A Service of Hope and Healing
There will be a special Christmas worship service Saturday for those struggling this year to feel the joy of the season. The intention is to create a sacred space for reflection, acceptance, healing and hope through prayer, communion and powerful music. The service is scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. at United Methodist Church, 702 S. Highway 69 in Albert Lea.
4. Christmas sing-a-long
The OTH Oompah Brass Band will play a holiday Christmas Sing-A-Long from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Worth Brewing Co., 835 Central Ave. in Northwood. Celebrate the season with good holiday cheer and belt out your favorite Christmas songs, oompah-style with brass band accompaniment. The performance is free and family-friendly with refreshments available for purchase.
5. Ugly sweater skate
Bad fashion will be in style at the Ugly Sweater Skate from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Albert Lea City Arena, 701 Lake Chapeau Drive. Skate to the sounds of DJ Abrego and enjoy some holiday refreshments while having a giggle at all the silly sweaters. The ugliest sweater of all may even win a prize. The event, hosted by the city of Albert Lea, will cost $4 to participate, with an additional $1 for skate rental.
