It looked as though it was going to be a long night for the Tigers in the first period after the Bulldogs went up 2-0 in the beginning five minutes.

Senior Campbell Cichosz cut into the lead with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute of the first period.

Down 2-1 heading into the second period, the Tigers evened the score three minutes in, when Cichosz scored, again unassisted, while they Tigers were shorthanded. It was the only goal of the period.

Junior Blake Ulve gave Albert Lea its only lead of the game two minutes into the third period on a goal assisted by Cichosz. Minnesota River scored just one minute later to tie the game and scored 10 minutes into overtime to take the win.

The girls’ team came out on the losing end of a heartbreaking game.

After being up 4-1 over Luverne in the third period, Albert Lea game up five goals to fall 6-5.

Senior Mia Fjelsta and junior Alli Dulitz scored in the first period to take a 2-0 lead, before Luverne scored its first goal of the game in the second.

Fjelsta scored again with five seconds remaining in the period, taking a 3-1 lead into the third period.

Sophomores Esther Yoon and Lucy Stay scored in the third but the comeback attempt from Luverne was too strong.

The Cardinals scored in the second, seventh, 10th, 12th and finally the 17th minute to stun the Tigers by one goal.

The boys fall to 2-2 on the season and will play again Thursday at Winona.

The girls drop to 4-5 and will play again Thursday on the road against Rochester Lourdes.
