A.L. boys’ hockey falls to tough Owatonna team, 5-1

After dropping a tight matchup against Waseca Saturday night, the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team traveled to Owatonna Tuesday night looking to get back on the winning track.

The Huskies, however, proved to be a tough opponent as the Tigers dropped the game 5-1.

Owatonna was the only team to score in the first period with a goal in the fifth minute of play.

The Huskies scored again the opening minutes of the second period before the Tigers cut the lead in half when senior Culley Larson hit the back of the net off an assist from fellow senior Danny Chalmers.

The Huskies scored again before the end of the period to extend their lead to two once again.

Down 3-1 entering the third and final period, Albert Lea was down, but not yet out.

The Tigers held on through the first 12 minutes of the period, however, Owatonna all but sealed the game with their fourth goal on a power play with under six minutes remaining.

The Huskies made it 5-1 two minutes later, where the game would end. 

Sophomore Braden Fjelsta was in the goal for the Tigers and saved 19 shots.

Overall the Tigers took 16 shots on goal, scoring on one. The Huskies took 24 shots on goal and scored on five.

The Tigers fall to 7-10-1 on the season and will play again Thursday when they host the Cougars of Mankato East.

With seven games left in the regular season, the Tigers currently sit in the No. 7 seed in the Section 1A standings. If they end the season there, they would host the No. 10 seed in the first round of the tournament.
